Made In Japan 16.03.11
60’s childhood: summers waiting for the Lyons Maid ice cream van on a council estate, listening to the Beetles on the radio and playing on the pavement with toy cars was a long way from made in Japan now. It can’t be much good, it says “made in Japan” on it was a common sentiment at the time. And so it was for a while it seemed. We went to the moon; record players became stereo’s. The world was black and white for ever it seemed, then one day the television was in colour and bright yellow cars with sharp chrome detail suddenly raced around the streets with names like Datsun. A new sound filled the morning air, thrashing past me on my paper round by the name of Yamaha while the daily news kept us bored in between power cuts and strikes by British Leyland. The 70’s had arrived.
While England lost its way as a producing nation Japan saw the future.

Cheltenham 4 Day Festival 15.03.11
The thumping beat of corporate entertainment, swaying advertising balloons in the sky, chinking of glasses & laughing was soon drowned out by the almighty cheers from the grandstand in the finishing straight that just kept building until the winning horse finally crossed the line and this was day 1 of the Cheltenham 4 day festival in its Centenary year 2011

Birds South Cerney 13.03.11
It looks like Spring is finally with us. It was a really warm afternoon today following heavy rain in the morning with just a gentle breeze, perfect. The usual competition for bate anglers leave on the banks for the birds when packing up sparked some action between the Swans & Canada Geese. Of course the Swans won but we will see how this develops as last year I did actually see Canada Geese turn the tables when another pair of Swans came to take over the lake. Mallard ducks also had some tussles. We saw 5 Red Crested Pochard Ducks paired up, so that’s encouraging and under a lovely clear sky a Blue Tit tucked in to catkins on the goat willow tree .

Cirencester Market Monthly Poultry Sale By Voyce Pullin 10.03.11
2nd Thursday every month is market day at Cirencester, when farmers bring to market live stock to sell and buy. Today’s was business as usual, well almost, the mood was a bit lack lustre for some with grumblings of cattle feed costs the main topic and the obvious consequences it brings, impacting on pig sales most notabley with some piglets selling for as little as £10.00 each.
Steve Kincart of Burley Fields Lake Farm took along fully ready Beef, his Hereford, Dexster & Dexster Cross fetching between £100.00 and £135.00 per Kilo so he was pleased.
Poultry did pretty well with fine examples on show and sheep did very well said Chris Voyce Of Voyce Pullin, with a spread of stock going to local butchers and some to supermarket chains.

Farmers Take The Strain 08.03.11
With the price of wheat at an all time high, what gives. Farmers battle to try and keep meat prices down for customers, at the same time absorbing 100% price increases on animal feed over the last year. Usually the world has a surplus but a poor grain harvest takes the blame. At the same time Supermarkets report huge profits. With other food prices growing week by week it only seems logical that we should eat the best our money buys, so why not support your local farm & butcher as I do.

34 Swans At Epney Sunset 06.03.11
With the sun about to set over the River Seven at Epney, 3 ducks paddled around in calm water , the river was like glass, a distant bonfire drifted on the chilly air, when suddenly I turned round to see coming out of the sun a small group of swans flying past me. I had seen them earlier down river and should have been keeping a closer eye on them but was also getting ready for the sunset pictures. With the wrong camera in my hands and blinded by the sun it was rush to change cameras and grab the right one with the zoom lens to get something as they made their way up river. They then flew in a large anti clockwise circuit picking up more birds to form the largest group of swans I have ever seen, I counted 34 before they came in to land several fields away with that distinctive call. It really was an unforgettable experience.

Baiting Up Lake 2 Wick Water by Marcus 05.03.11
A bitter north easterly breeze slowed catches for some 05.03.11
Although a considerable amount of fish were lost in December and January when Lake 2 froze over at Wick Water South Cerney, fishing proper has resumed. Keen anglers braved the cold northerly wind on a grey weekend with some fine catches, notably several Pike up to 20lb were caught in Lake 23 by Gary Dodson, demonstrating he had the touch this weekend.
I spent a few minutes with Marcus while he caught a nice Mirror Carp in Lake 2 and demonstrated his bating up. It must have been cold as the maggots hardly wriggled.
