Arlingham Tower River Severn 30.01.11

Shock Remains 30.01.11

Shock Remains 30.01.11

Well, It did make me think when I saw this ahead of me. I quickly regained my thoughts as we of course don’t have a back bone like this, phew. I would say on closer inspection it looks like it could be the remains of a deer but will check to make sure before I commit my self. I came across this washed up on the banks of the River Severn nr Arlingham Towers today.

Big Garden Bird Watch 30.01.11

As part of the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch to establish our UK bird population , we thought we would follow the program today and are pleased to report some birds did make an appearance on a freezing cold day. All the feeders were topped up. I carried on in my hide taking photographs of Sparrows and a Dunnock, whilst my wife filled out the chart with some additions to the birds listed. We will be registering our list on the RSPB site in due course.

This is what we saw between 11.25am – 12.25pm in our garden.

Severn Bore Over Bridge No.1 23.01.11

Severn Bore Over Bridge 23.01.11
A small group of spectators watched in the cold with anticipation for the bore to arrive. A large swell pushed its way to the bridge, still with force. Even after meeting high water levels I was struck by how the huge volume of water still  lifted itself and swayed from side to side as the river twisted and turned its way towards Maisemore Weir.

The approaching bore looked powerful, twisting and turning, catching & reflecting light like glass as it went through, looking more like oil in appearance.

Severn Bore Arlingham Surfing 23.01.11
Rain fell this morning but turned a bit milder with a nice grey sky to greet Surfers at Arlingham. Looking down river a hint of pink sky tried to burn through the grey mist but soon disappeared leaving the lads to surf the bore in style.

Severn Bore Epney Waiting For The Bore 22.01.11

Severn Bore 22.01.11
A hazy grey blue sky and a good hard white frost greeted the bore surfers at Epney today, for one of the first bores of the year. The River Severn was like a duck pond. The March bore usually captures the headlines but today’s bore produced some interesting shots both at Epney and Hempstead. By Maisemore higher water levels stopped any chances of surfing, instead the large swell gently pushed its way to Maisemore Weir.

Peach Moon Seen Nr South Cerney 19.01.11

Amazing is the only word to describe the moon tonight when I looked across a field in the fading light. Some small bits of low cloud would move across it now and again but all the time the Moon maintained this lovely peach colour.

Lake 2 South Cerney Wick Water 19.01.11
Out of action and still recovering after the South Cerney Angling Club lost several hundred fish just after Christmas when the lake froze over. On a beautiful January day I did see some activity under water which is encouraging. Bailiffs are monitoring the lake daily and will advise when fishing resumes.

Moonlight Over The River Churn 18.01.11

Winter Light South Cerney 18.01.11

Winter Light South Cerney 18.01.11

Someone once said there’s no colour in winter! Well, I beg to differ, the trees are on fire, no actually it’s that lovely moment when the sky takes on a subtle icy tone, against the low sun drenched trees.  Birds float across the sky to roost, Robin sings his final song and the moon comes up reminding us its going to be a frosty night. All is well at Wick Water.

Heron Fishing At South Cerney 18.01.11

Heron Fishing At South Cerney 18.01.11

Now the sun had gone I thought it could be the low light under the trees that may have prevented the Heron from seeing me, but maybe the fishing skill just took over, either way I got as close as I ever have on this occasion, across the corner of the lake still some distance though on the 70-300mm lens.

New Year Catch 18.01.11

First of all I must apologies for the (noise) photographic term for grainy look in this picture, it wasn’t intended, my fault for forgetting a previous setting I had left on the camera, all the same I wanted you to see this picture as it was the first fish I saw caught in 2011, by Dave Potter, a local angler to South Cerney, this time catching a 6lb Tench in lake 1 at Wick Water at sun down

What lovely eyes Tench have
